Kenneth E. Mitts, the first vice president for finance and administration and CFO at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, joined the University staff in May 2008, and has seen the University through many recent milestones, including its creation as a stand-alone institution of higher learning in May 2009. His vision and guidance led to the creation of the University’s finance and administration division that includes such functions as facility management, information technology, accounting, procurement, human resources, and payroll.

Prior to his role at A&M-San Antonio, Mitts had a long career with the United States Air Force.  A leading finance officer at several Air Force bases across the country – including Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Mitts began his Air Force career by serving as an assistant professor of aerospace studies  at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M-Commerce). He also served three years in Germany leading the largest accounting and finance operation in Europe. In addition, Mitts served as the transportation squadron commander at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, one of the largest Air Force transportation operations in the world.  Over his two decades of military service, Mitts received six medals for meritorious service.

After leaving the Air Force in 2000, Mitts held positions in customer service locations, managing call center operations, designing new distribution models, and improving general employee performance and customer service in a variety of categories.

In 2003, after participating in the Troops to Teachers program, Mitts received his EC-12 Special Education certification and began working with the San Antonio Independent School District, providing special education services to elementary school children with disabilities. By 2004 he was certified as an EC-4 Generalist and taught fourth grade.

Mitts returned to the Air Force life in 2006 when he was chosen to be the Deputy Program Manager for the Defense Enterprise Accounting and Management System (DEAMS) Air Force Functional Program Management Support Service Team. In this capacity, Mitts created the Compliance Integrated Product Team (IPT) and the program’s resolution process for compliance-related issues, creating the standards for future Air Force financial statements. He was able to streamline operations both small and large, saving time and money from 10 man-hours a week in one operation to more than $900K in another.

Mitts has held several leadership positions in professional associations, including local chapters of the National Defense Transportation Association and the Professional Teleservice Management Association, as well as positions in the United Way Campaign of San Antonio. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the South San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the Land Heritage Institute, and City South Management Authority.

Mitts received a Bachelor of Business Administration at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) and a Masters of Business Administration at Barry College (now Barry University).
