On Friday, February 12, 2010, The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents named Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier the inaugural president of Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Ferrier earned a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Our Lady of the Lake University, and a Doctorate of Educational Administration from Texas A&M University. After serving multiple appointments in the Department of Education, Ferrier accepted the position of executive director of Texas A&M University-Kingsville System Center-San Antonio. Under her leadership, the University achieved stand-alone status in May 2009. Her dynamic and energetic leadership continues to be the driving force behind the fast-paced growth and development.
